In the file name, JPG refers to Joint Photographics Export Group, which devised the format. Functionally, JPG and JPEG are the same.
In the older days of computers, the character limit for file types was three (hence JPG), however JPEG is now more common. JPG files are made to minimize the size of photographs, making them easier to share and use in web design. It is easy to convert JPG photos to PDF since most of the photos you find online are in JPG format.
Whats a JPG-Large?
JPG-Large is a more recent extension for a larger JPG. It is sometimes seen on social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter, that JPG-Large images are uploaded. If the image is resized on the platform, it may change to JPG-Large instead. You can rename a JPG-Large file to a .jpg or .jpeg if you are unable to open it over the .jpg-large extension.
Advantages of JPG / JPEGs
Smaller File Size
Images in JPG format have this advantage, which is why they are so popular. For example, using JPG images for a website will provide faster page loads and a better user experience. JPEG files are compressed about 10:1 when saved for the first time. You can expect the file size to be 2MB if you save a 20MB (megabyte) image as a JPEG.Using free image resizing software can help you reduce the file size.
Widely Shareable and Viewable Online
As JPG images are common file types, they are easily shared and viewed online. The image file can be viewed without any additional software.
Disadvantages of JPG / JPEGs
There is a risk of quality loss when compression is used
Despite JPGs’ small file size, their main advantage also happens to be their weakness.
As pixels are compressed, they are blocked together based on the same color or value. A smaller file creates a higher quality image, but you lose some of the data when saving the file, so it cannot be restored to its former glory.
Printed wall graphics for Printing
Due to JPEG’s compression capabilities, JPG files are best suited to viewing online rather than printing. For printing, export your designs or images as PDFs instead of JPEGs.
